This tiny common swift fell out of his parents nest and is currently being our Mogli child. I went to three different pet shops and a veterinary clinic - nowhere could I find insects for the bird which it usually eats when raised by it's biological parents. From day to day the bird gets more confident to climb up on sofas, curtains and my naked shoulder - as you can see it has itchy claws. Yesterday the bird was probably unaware of the fact that it was being part of a performance at the opening of an Art Exhibition - as my roommate is the artist.

The psybient music project Shpongle composed this beautiful song that contains parts of an old Turkish poem which has often been used in Turkish Art Music (türk sanat müzigi). It says "We are at the dawn of the irreversible night, time is too late (to go back)." Thanks for this inspiration, k! :-)

Cultural Exchange between the Netherlands and Turkey

Das Zentrum präsentiert sich auf seiner Homepage globalisierungskritisch und gleichzeitig EU-freundlich:

Globalisierung spielt eine zentrale Rolle in der ökonomischen, politischen und kulturellen Transformation unserer Zeit und dennoch begreifen wir ihre Neuartigkeit und komplexen Prozesse kaum. Unter Betrachtung der türkischen Bemühungen für einen Beitritt zur Europäischen Union und der Problemregionen des Balkans und des Mittleren Ostens, die das Land geografisch umschließen, besteht dringender Forschungsbadarf in diesem Gebiet.

Das Hauptziel des Zentrums für Globale Studien an der Yildiz Teknik Universität ist es, Forschung in unserer Universität im Bereich "Globalisierung" durch die Erschließung finanzieller Quellen für solche Forschungsvorhaben und das Verbreiten der Ergebnisse an ein nationales und internationales Publikum durch Konferenzen und Veröffentlichungen zu unterstützen. Das Zentrum setzt sich ferner zum Ziel, Trainings und Beratung in diesem Feld anzubieten.

Die Forschung- und Verbreitungsaktivitäten des CGS konzentriert sich in erster Linie auf folgende vier Bereiche, deren jeder Einzelne einen direkten Bezug zu Globalisierung hat:

• Die Entwicklung der Konzepte und Institutionen globaler Demokratie und Menschenrechte im Zuge der Veränderung vom Nationalstaat zu supranationalen politischen Unionen, wie der EU.

• Die soziale und politische Repräsentation von kulturellen Identitäten, die im Zuge voranschreitenter Globalisierung neu imaginiert werden. Konkreter formuliert meint dies den historischen Hintergrund und gegenwärtige Formen nationalistischer und religiöser Bewegungen.
  

• Die Voraussetzungen für eine Umstrukturierung des derzeit von der Globalisierung bedrohten Wohlfahrtstaates.
  

• Die Bedingungen für nachhaltige Entwicklung im Angesicht ökonomischer und ökologischer Probleme, die über nationale Grenzen hinweg auftreten.
  

Solche Untersuchungen im Rahmen des Zentrums und eine nationale und internationale Verbreitung haben eine unmittelbare Relevanz für Debatten, in denen es um das wichtigste Anliegen der Türkei, eine Vertiefung der Demokratie und Erneuerung der Ökonomie im Kontext einer zukünftigen EU-Mitgliedschaft, geht.

Das Zentrum veranstaltet derzeit regelmäßige Seminarreihen, nationale und internationale Konferenzen und partizipiert in geförderten Projekten.

The Sound of Istanbul

Lately we watched this tremendously interesting documentary by Fatih Akin with a turkish course in University. This movie follows the traces of several musicians in and around Istanbul. For example the band Baba Zula is making music on a boat driving on the Bosphorus, between the continents of Europe and Asia. There are many more musicians to discover, that partly belong to minorities like Kurds or Roma. The closeness to the artists and their instuments creates a feeling of intimacy and leads to a gripping experience.

"Let it all flow out"

This piece of advice was given to the crowd during a concert by a guitarist of a band called Crystal Pastures a couple of weeks ago in the Bielefelder AJZ. This band does very exciting european roots and polka music. Let it all flow out, all the stress and unpleasant thoughts and feeling that disrupt your personal evolvement should not be there.
